Step 1

Can I make this commitment?

The first thing to consider when thinking about adding a Pit Bull to your household is the type of commitment you are prepared to make. This is huge! Pit Bulls need a lot of your time and a lot of attention. You need to be prepared to exercise your Pit Bull, to groom your Pit Bull, to train your Pit Bull and to give it love and attention.

I would suggest taking an honest look at your daily schedule and consider where your Pit Bull would fit into that schedule.  When do you have time for walks and are you home enough hours a day to give your Pit Bull the attention it needs?  If you work some long days are you willing to make the financial commitment of bringing in a dog walker?  Time constraints are one of the leading reasons many people decide to give up a dog.  This surprisingly happens many times within just a few months of adopting.  This is not a result of a major schedule change but rather poor planning.

Consider the other family members and the commitment they are going to be willing to make to the Pit Bull.  Be realistic with what they are capable of doing as well. Having a system in place is key to being a successful rescuer. Pay attention to your life during this time ask yourself am I spending enough time with my kids, my spouse, my friends. Am I spending too much time at work? Pit bulls demand a lot, if your life is not in order you should take this time to get your prioritizes worked out before you rescue. Pit bull can make life difficult if you are not structured.
