How To Make A Pit bull Dog Collar

There are a lot of different beliefs about dog collars but what it comes down to is what dog collar works for you and your dog. If you do not believe your dog collar is going to work it is not going to work. If you are not comfortable with the collar either is your dog, they know. The best way to decide what dog collar to go with is to get to know your dog. My pit bulls do not walk with dog collars called gentle leaders, gentle head halter or harness. Pit bulls are pullers by nature so there reaction to your pull is a pull. What I want from my pit bulls is for them to know who is who.

Walking my pit bull does a couple things. It gives me a chance to show my dog who the human is and who the dog is. The physical connection between you and your dog being the collar and leash plays a huge role in what I am trying to do. I am not a dog trainer and do not play one with my dogs. I have four pit bulls and I am the “alpha”. That is what needs to establish to be effective with my pit bulls. This does not happen from a dog collar or a leash no matter what the name is even a gentle, happy dog leader collar.
There are hundreds of methods collar and leash set ups this is the one I found to work the best. Get a light cloth leash the one that is about a ¼ or a ½  inch wide. You can get them at Wal-mart for a couple dollars. Stop at a hardware store and buy a metal O-ring (big enough to get the leash through but small enough not to slip over the clip.)  I get them for 95 cents. Thread your end of the leash through the ring and let it slide all the way down to the dog’s end. Now if you grab the handle and the clip the O-ring should slide freely up and down the leash.
Your dog’s neck is going in between the O-ring and the clip. Hold the O-ring in one hand and the clip in the other then hook the clip on the O-ring creating a slip action. This next part has to be right for this to be effective. Find your dog’s atom’s apple. The leash has to be above this part of your dog’s neck to be safe and work right. Slip the loop you have made with the clip and the ring over your dog’s head and above the atom’s apple and pull tight. You should be able to lift your dog’s front legs off the ground easily; the collar should just slightly behind the lower jaw on the bottom and slightly behind the ears on the top. Your dog should not make any choking sounds if it does you do not have the collar positioned right. The position of your dog’s feet slightly off the ground puts them in a very submissive state. Finally, when your comfortable that you have this right you need to tie a knot in the leash between the O-ring and the handle. Pull the collar tight enough that it will not slip down past the atom’s apple and will not slip over the dog’s head. When you get this right tie the knot. Now you have handle, knot, O-ring and clip.

What you have made is a perfect size slip collar. If the collar slides up and down your dog’s neck it needs to be tighter untie the knot and tie it down further. This setup is very effective for building a walking relationship with your pit bull. Leave the collar on for a little while your dog should be able to eat and drink and do everything normal with this setup if they can not something is wrong your pit bull should not even know this is attached.
